The year 2021 has begun, and we have entered a new stage in our lives. It has almost been a full year since our lives have completely changed from the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Now, we live with masks and continue to social distance as our front-liners are continuing to work to fight for our health. However, as we have reached the stage of burnout, it is more crucial than ever to take care of ourselves - both mentally and physically.
Many of us may have started off quarantine with the determination to eat healthier and practice good exercise habits. Some of us may have succeeded in reaching our goals, but some of us may have not. I have been in the same shoes. At first, I wanted to feel sorry for myself and just wallow in self-pity, but I learned that it only caused more set-backs. All it took was a small portion of a positive mindset to launch myself to do something I truly enjoyed. Once I got into the rhythm of being happy, I began the rest of my day with a new mindset. As we began with the same, strong mindset to come out of quarantine as our new selves, I hope that we can all continue that same mentality as we sprint into the new year. Just as COVID-19 came as a surprise to many of us as our lives drastically changed, going into the new year with a fresh mindset, ready to tackle anything that comes our way is something that I have learned during my time in quarantine. I mean, we did live through a pandemic — we can do anything that we can put our minds to! The important part here is that when we develop plans and goals for the new year, it is crucial to develop interim goals that can be reached at every step to show progression. Achieving these small goals may not seem like much at first, but having the small celebration of completing a step in your journey can do wonders for your mental health. Mental health seems to be one of the most overlooked fields of healthcare. However, our brains and mentality are some of the most important things that we carry in our bodies every day. To succeed, we must treat our mind as an egg — one must carry it delicately because if it cracks, it makes a mess! Just as there are a variety of uses and ways to cook eggs, our mind and soul are used throughout our whole entire body for numerous functions. So this new year, let's create smaller goals that are in the process of reaching the bigger picture, and take care of the delicate egg we carry in our head!
